FUNDED FUTURES ACCOUNTS / PLAIN ENGLISH

What Is a Funded Futures Account?

A funded futures account is a program with its own agreement, rule set and payout policy. It is not a personal brokerage balance, and the amount printed in the account name is not automatically the amount you can risk.

The usual path has stages

Most programs begin with an evaluation: a trader attempts to meet a target while remaining inside risk and conduct rules. A passed evaluation may lead to a performance or funded stage, and some firms may later offer access to live capital. The labels and exact mechanics differ from firm to firm.

For example, Topstep describes its Trading Combine as a real-time simulated evaluation, followed by an Express Funded Account and then, for selected traders, a Live Funded Account. Apex describes a progression from evaluation through performance account stages with a potential live invitation. Do not assume another provider uses the same sequence or definitions.

“Funded” does not mean you own the account balance

The account label is usually a program parameter. What you are buying is participation under an agreement, not a cash deposit into your own brokerage account. The practical question is what the rules permit, what can cause failure, and when a payout is eligible.

This distinction helps remove a common beginner trap: sizing trades from a headline account size instead of from the loss threshold.

Learn the contract before buying the account

A micro contract can reduce the dollar movement of a single tick compared with its larger counterpart, but it is still leveraged futures exposure. CME lists the Micro E-mini S&P 500 tick as 0.25 index points, worth $1.25, and the Micro E-mini Nasdaq-100 tick as 0.25 points, worth $0.50. Confirm current contract specifications before trading.

A useful pre-trade calculation is: number of contracts × stop in ticks × dollar value per tick. That is the planned loss before commissions, fees and slippage.

The first question to answer

Before choosing a firm, ask: “Can I use the platform calmly in simulation, and can I explain the provider’s rules for this exact account?” If either answer is no, use simulation and provider education first.

Common questions

Are funded futures accounts real money?

The answer depends on the provider and stage. Some stages are explicitly simulated; some firms may offer later live-capital access. Read the exact agreement and program page for the account you are considering.

Can you get payouts from a simulated funded account?

Some providers offer rewards or payouts under their program terms. Eligibility, timing and amount are governed by the provider’s current rules and are not guaranteed.
